Collie Rescue of Central NJ sent an email regarding the new strain of Parvo, called 2c.  Unfortunately they had 2 foster puppies die this week.  The puppies had been pulled from a shelter and were supposedly vaccinated.  Their vet feels it may have been this new strain of Parvo.  There have also been cases in adult vaccinated dogs, which indicates that the current vaccines are not providing protection from this new strain.

Please follow the link below for more information on the 2c Parvo.  Also, talk with your vet about your collies current vaccine.

    Respectfully,

    Diane Mancini

    President-CRLNE

Did you know -- February is Canine Weight Check Month

Remember your New Year's Resolution?

Has it already gone by the wayside?  Especially that resolution of losing weight?  Well, if your resolution hasn't held up to the test of time, how about your collie?

February 2008 has been designated as 'The National Canine Weight Check' month.  Did you know that almost half of the canines in the USA are overweight!!!  YIKES!

Veterinarians across the country have teamed up and are offering a free weight assessment for your canine!  Check with your own vet to find out if they are participating.  Or you can go to: CanineWeightCheck.com to find a vet near you that is.

Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine is looking for participants.

DOG BEHAVIOR STUDY (Thyroid)This dog behavior study is looking for dogs that are aggressive to their owners and also have a thyroid problem. The double-blind study will focus on borderline cases, dogs that have normal thyroid levels but are in the bottom 20th percentile of the normal thyroid hormone level range. Half of these dogs will receive thyroid hormone supplements that will bring them to the upper part of the normal range and the other half will receive a placebo. The study will then assess if treating the thyroid problem decreases the aggressive behavior. The study lasts for ten weeks. The first two weeks are a baseline phase when the owners count the number of aggressive episodes that occur per day and document them on a form. Then the dog’s aggressive behavior is monitored again for the next 6 weeks after dog gets the supplement. The participants can be from any part of the country and do not have to bring the dogs to Tufts in order to participate.

In order to qualify, a dog must be aggressive (growl, lift a lip, snarl or bite) to a human family member 4 - 5 times/week, and not be currently being treated for a thyroid condition. Please contact Nicole Cottam, Behavior Service Coordinator, at 508-887-4802 (nicole.cottam@tuft.edu) for more information.

EDUCATION

As announced in our December newsletter, CRLNE is going to provide articles, ideas, discussions on all sorts of canine subjects via our website -  From diseases to dentistry, parasites to pampering, grooming to growling!

The CRLNE Board of Directors has appointed an Education Coordinator to research and write all these informative articles for all to enjoy.  This person has many years of rescue and education experience under her 'collar' (sorry) and we are delighted she has taken on this project.  I would like to introduce our newly appointed Education Coordinator-Pam Frazier!

    Happy reading.

Can it really be almost 2008??  We have a lot planned for this coming year.  First is our Memorial Page in February. If you haven't e-mailed yours, the deadline is January 15th (see December 6 below).  Spring brings the Collie Specialty Shows in Connecticut and Maine and CRLNE will be there with new merchandise. We always look forward to renewing friendships. If you would like to volunteer at our booth or would just like to see collies in the show ring, plan to stop by. There is no admission charge.  Our annual CRLNE picnic will be in June (date to be determined).  We will be at pet stores and other events so check our calendar of events frequently.

We can't begin to thank all of you who have shopped on-line.  The store is becoming a major source of funds to help homeless collies.  The costs of caring for the turned-in collies keeps rising and we must work even harder to raise funds.  Your help is needed and most sincerely appreciated.

We wish all a most Happy and Healthy New Year!

December 6, 2007

We will be featuring a Memorial Page in February to honor our Collies that are waiting at the Bridge.  Please send a photo with Collie's name, dates of birth and death, and a one-line caption, for example: "Forever in my heart" to crlneinfo@aol.com before January 15, 2008.

 October 27, 2007

A separate page has been added in order to keep you abreast of the Seeley Collie seizure in New York state.

PETROCK FEST 2007

We would like to thank all who stopped by the CRLNE booth to say hello.   The collies love to meet and greet new people and all were exhausted on the way home!

Please check our calendar of events to see where we will be next.  Stop by and see us.  We love to talk to our extended collie families.   And what better conversation than about collies!!!!

August 30, 2007

Will your adopted dog's picture be on the CRLNE 2008 calendar?  It's not "TOO LATE" yet but it soon will be.  You can e-mail your digital photos to collieville@tds.net or send pictures by regular mail to Todd Boucher, 179 Bailey Rd., Northfield, VT  05663.  Every dog submitted will have at least one picture on the calendar. Please include dog's name and a short write up. The month of May will be dedicated to those dogs that now live only in our memories. Remember - animals only - no humans!  Absolute deadline - October 1, 2007!

If you have ever wondered what goes on in the Collie world, wanted to know more about the breed, or just like looking at pictures of beautiful dogs, you can find all of this and more with the free weekly e-magazine, Collies On Line.  We have linked the site to ours so just go to "Links" and check them out.

The Collie Club of Maine is holding its 18th annual educational seminar on September 30, 2007 at the Cliff House Resort & Spa in Ogunquit, Maine. This year's topic is "A Breeder's Perspective", presented by Mary H. Wells of Blossom Hill Collies. Moe information can be found at   http://www.colliesonline.com/ad_archive_2007/ccme_072807.html

August 12, 2007

It's been quiet this month but Collie Rescue will be at several events in September - check the Calendar of Events page for details. We have a good time manning the CRLNE booths and look forward to visiting with you.  We can always use more volunteers. If interested in helping for an hour or more, contact our Fund Raising Coordinator, Tammy Goodman at tarinann@aol.com for more information.  We look forward to visiting with our alumni, those dogs who have found their forever homes and their people at these events.

July 16, 2007

We are experiencing a collie-turn-in epidemic!  Three more ready-to-go collies on the website today and others waiting for foster homes.  We need more foster homes so if you have been considering fostering or if you have questions about what it entails, e-mail us at crlneinfo@aol.com or call 802-222-5124.  It's a very rewarding experience.

July 1, 2007

Do you have pictures taken at the picnic on June 9th?  Please e-mail them to us for use on the website. Send to CRLNE.Webmaster@gmail.com as attachments. Let us know whether or not you would like us to list your name.  We would also welcome success stories or anything that would be of interest to the visitors to our site. We may also use them in the newsletter.  Thanks for your help.

June 27, 2007

The picnic was a big success, even though we had a little rain.  We had lots of food and fellowship and enjoyed meeting Jarrod, the hero collie and his people, David and Celeste.  We hope you are in the habit of checking "Calendar of Events" so that when CRLNE is at a site near you, you can stop by to visit.

Emma is on "Available Collies" and is looking forward to her new home.  What a success story she is, thanks to all of you!

June 4, 2007

Our biggest event of the year is almost here - don't miss the annual meeting and picnic this coming Saturday! The weather looks promising but even if it rains, we'll be under cover in the big pavillion.  This is when our Foster Parents get the biggest reward - reuniting with the foster dogs and seeing how happy they are with their new families. We all love the parade.

Check out the latest addition to "Available Dogs" - she's a beauty!! And we have more coming so keep checking in. If you have even the slightest inclanation to adopt, get you application in. There is no cost or obligation.

We'll see you on Saturday!

May 28, 2007

Teddy has been adopted and is thriving in his forever home.  Several new dogs have come into the system and will be posted as soon as they have been evaluated and vet checked.  Keep watching!

May 19, 2007

We are busy preparing for the members' Annual Meeting and picnic on June 9th.  For the first time there will be a Silent Auction. We'll still have the usual raffle, parade of adopted dogs, merchandise for sale and lots of food.      Jarrod, a Collie Service Dog will be our special guest, along with his people.  A few years ago, he saved the life of his person.  Come and learn more about this heroic boy.

 April 25, 2007

Warm weather is just around the corner (although I did see ice and snow in Maine last weekend) and that means we need to remember to keep our collies cool.  For some great tips go to www.mydogiscool.com.

April 18, 2007

Two new available Collies have been added - maybe one of them is waiting for you.
